Darkshards are the key unit early game. You can either go darkshard fully or darkshards+dreadspears for blocking. Try and get a black ark as early as possible. Most of your recruitment buildings should be from the black ark. Black arks make battles easier + reduce upkeep. Economy-wise focus all your unpaid interns your richest province.
